Locarno’s Piazza Grande sees protest against war in Gaza ahead of screening

The Plaza Grande at the Locarno Film Festival was the site of the demonstration last night (August 8) and was hosted by local activists in search of an end to the violence in Gaza.

At the end of the demonstration, Giona a Nazzaro, the artistic director of the festival, admitted what happened on stage to present the film, saying, “We’ll be with you, thank you.”

Local media described the organizers as a “nonpartisan and nondenominational” group of citizens known as Atzione Cartolin. In a statement sent to local news outlets, the group said: “Last night, in the brave words of Giona Nazzarro, the Locarno Film Festival expressed its anger at the tragic suffering that has been inflicted on the people of Gaza through the ongoing violation of human rights, and we are deeply grateful.”

The Piazza Grande section of the Locarno Film Festival is an outdoor venue that can accommodate up to 8,000 people.
