The magnitude 5.8 submarine earthquake rocked the eastern side of Indonesia on Sunday morning, causing 29 people to injure, including serious conditions.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake hit 15 kilometers north of the Poso district of central Sulawesi, followed by at least 15 aftershocks.
The tsunami warning was not issued by Indonesian authorities.
Indonesia’s national disaster mitigation measures said most of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Most of them came from a group of people attending Sunday morning services at churches in affected areas, said Abdul Muhari, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.
“Amateur videos showing structural damage to the church are being distributed. The Poso Disaster Mitigation Bureau continues to make a rapid assessment in this area to determine the early impact of the earthquake,” Muhari said.
Indonesia, a vast archipelago of over 270 million people, is frequently hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis because it is located in the “ring of fire,” a volcanic arc and fault line in the Pacific Basin.
In 2022, at least 602 people died in the city of Cianjour, West Java, due to a magnitude 5.6 earthquake. This was Indonesia’s most deadly disaster since the 2018 tremor and Sulawesi tsunami, killing more than 4,300 people.
In 2004, a very powerful Indian Ocean earthquake caused a tsunami, killing more than 230,000 people in dozens of countries.
