Box office revenue in the U.S. and Canada in 2025 is expected to total $8.87 billion, an increase of 1.5% from 2024’s $8.74 billion.

The expected tally, released by measurement firm ComScore (which is expected to release final numbers next week), is down 22% compared to $11.4 billion in 2019, before the pandemic. It also fell short of the widely expected $9 billion in 2025, due to a disappointing 2024, when box office receipts were limited by a sparse release schedule.

According to data firm Entelligence, the number of domestic movie theater visitors in 2025 is estimated to be 780 million, down 4.9% from the more than 820 million in 2024.

According to boxofficemojo.com, the highest-grossing film in the domestic market was a Warner Bros. film. Minecraft moviesfor $423.9 million, Disney lilo & stitch$423.8 million, Warner superman$354.2 million.

Among studios, Disney led the field with US/Canadian box office revenue (studio estimates as of December 31) of $2.49 billion. Disney is also expected to lead the way internationally with a total of $4.08 billion and $6.58 billion worldwide, although all studios have not released their year-end numbers as of press time.

ComScore Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian commented on the 2025 box office gross, highlighting the strength of PG-rated films, which generated $2.93 billion in annual box office revenue.

Dergarabedian was optimistic about next year’s domestic box office outlook, saying, “2026 has the potential to be the biggest box office year since the pandemic.” “The domestic revenue benchmark of $9 billion is still out of reach this year at $8.87 billion (and only reached once in the post-pandemic 2023, or ‘Barbenheimer’ year), but it will be an easier target in 2026.”
