American actor Peter Salusgaard called for “group action” to counter the division of the US at the opening ceremony of 59th Karlovy will change the International Film Festival (KVIFF) on Friday, July 4th.

Speaking on stage when he received the Presidential Honorary Award, Sarsgaard said, “Any actor will tell you that good work is possible only in an environment that supports it.

“My country is trying to retreat from its global responsibility and go on its own, so it is also divided into factions from within, divided into political, gender, sexuality, race, and Jewish wars.

“But when you have a common enemy, that’s not all,” continued Sarusgard. “The enemy is the power to separate us, making us individual. We all know who they are. Collective action is the only way of art and our happiness.”

Sarsgaard ended with the citement of former Czechoslovakia president Vaclav Havel.

Luxembourger actress Vicki Creeps, another recipient of the Presidential Award at the ceremony, also gestured towards social division in her speech. “We need to try to keep the film present and spread love, peace and, most importantly, forgiveness,” Creeps said.

Most of the opening ceremony was centered around the president of the late festival, Jiri Bartoska, who passed away in May at the age of 78. Since its 1994 renewal, Bartoska has been president of the festival, regularly crediting it for saving the event from cancellations and turning it into a premier international festival.

“People say no one is irreplaceable — that’s not true,” said Malek Eben, the host of the ceremony. “If (Baltoska) had spent more years, he would have been there for years to come.” Eben believed that he had transformed the festival into a “living creature” and that Bartoska “will live longer than all of us… Giri would have been pleased to see it.”

Since his death in May, debate has been underway regarding the town’s permanent respect for Bartoska, including naming the streets and terraces after him. Eben joked that a more appropriate gesture would be to rename “Karlovy’s highest chimney is different” after Bartoska, who was known to always have a cigarette in his hand.
