Portugal and Liverpool FC football player Diogo Jota passed away Thursday after a road accident, the Portuguese Football Association confirmed.
The 28-year-old winger was involved in an overnight accident in Zamora on Thursday, when the car he was traveling off the road and set fire to its fire, Spanish outlet Marca reported.
The accident occurred on A-52 near Sanabria. According to reports, Portugal International brother Andre Silva was also a footballer who played for Riga Portugal’s two-sided Penafiel.
“The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community have been completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva in Spain this morning,” the Portuguese FA said in a statement Thursday.
“We lost two champions. The deaths of Diogo and Andre Silva represent the irreparable loss of Portuguese football and we do everything each day to honor their legacy.”
FC Porto, which spent a year on loan in 2016 – 2017, expressed his apology after news that Jota had passed away.
“The Porto Football Club is in mourning,” the club said in a post on X.
“Please rest in peace,” the club concluded.
Porto native Diogo Jose Teixeira da Silva became known as Diogo Jota after choosing to wear “Diogo J,” and distinguished him from other players with similar names in his youth club Pasos de Ferreira.
Following his move to Atletico Madrid in 2016, Jota’s inventory quickly rose due to his lightning pace and clinical finish. He arrived at Liverpool FC in 2020 after a stint at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which helped him advance to the Premier League in 2017-18.
Jota registered six goals and three assists in 26 Premier League appearances for Liverpool in 2024-25, celebrating the club’s 20th league title in May.
In addition to this year’s Premier League title, Jota won one FA Cup and one EFL Cup with the Liverpool-based club. He also won two UEFA Nations League titles for the Portuguese national team, scoring 14 goals in 49 matches.
Jota married longtime partner Root Cardoso on June 22nd two weeks ago. The couple had three children.
