Russia attacked the Ukrainian city of Smie on Tuesday, killing at least three people and injuring 20 people, according to Ukrainian emergency services.

According to the results of a preliminary investigation, Russia attacked the city with a long-range, multi-sold rocket system.

Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky said at least one of the missiles failed to explode, penetrating the walls of a nine-storey residential apartment.

“The Russians launched a savage strike on Sami, which directly targets the city and its ordinary streets with rocket artillery. It was a completely deliberate attack on civilians,” Zelenskyy said in a statement.

The Sumy Region junta reported that medical facilities, automobiles and residential buildings were damaged by strikes.

“That’s all you need to know about Russia’s so-called ‘desire to end this war,’ the Ukrainian president added, calling for the US and Europe to increase pressure that “the day will not pass without Russia raiding Ukrainian cities and villages.”

The Smie region in northeastern Ukraine borders the Russian region of Kursk and Belgorod. Proximity to the border has become a constant target of Russian artillery fire and repeated attacks.

The Moscow military recently strengthened its military operations along the borders of the Smie region. Zelenskyy previously warned that Russia was trying to accumulate troops of about 50,000 people in that part of the border, invading it, and create a 10km buffer zone.
