Serbia has shown strong interest in participating in the BRICS Alliance at the 2025 summit in July. Serbian Prime Minister Duro Macutt announced that his administration is advocating for expansion to become part of the bloc. The 17th summit is scheduled to take place on July 6th and 7th in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“We consistently assert the need to deepen our collaboration with traditional partners and friends. BRICS countries are the most important players on the world stage, and the development of strong, mutually beneficial relationships with them is a strategic concern for us.” The Serbian Prime Minister said.

Serbia wants to be part of the BRICS expansion

BRICS announced its new “partner countries” in 2024, but added 13 countries to the folding, but Serbia was not part of it. Countries include Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

Apart from these, another batch of 45 countries has expressed interest in joining the alliance. Twenty-three countries have officially submitted applications, while 22 have been informally made public to enter the bloc. Even Serbia has sent official applications to join BRICS since 2023, when the alliance was open to expand.

Apart from BRICS, the Serbian Prime Minister has made it clear that his administration is about to join the European Union. Serbia “We continue our path to membership in the European Union.” He told a foreign media outlet. The country has been sanctioned in the past, particularly after the division of Yugoslavia.

Whether BRICS plans to expand in 2025 and whether Serbia will allow it to enter the bloc will be known in July. Furthermore, expansion is based on consensus, and all countries must agree to strengthen their alliances more. Most importantly, members need to be sure what Serbia can bring to the table that raises alliances.
