Peter Chans She doesn’t have a nameStarring Zhang Ziyi will be split into two parts for the theatrical release. The first part is scheduled to open the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF, June 13th-22nd).
The 1940s Shanghai set crime thriller won a 150-minute runtime that premiered from a competition at Cannes last year. In a video released on Siff’s WeChat and Weibo social media accounts, director Chan explained that the film will be released in two parts.
Both films are connected to each other and can also be considered standalone. “It’s a special arrangement for me and a huge risk,” said Chan of the video.
The story is based on a famous unsolved murder case in Shanghai in the 1940s and revolves around a lower class woman played by Zhang, known only by her husband Zhan-Zhou’s surname. When she is found in her husband’s broken body, she confesses to his murder, but later retracts her statement, resulting in a famous trial.
According to SIFF, the first part has a period of 96 minutes and has the same English title. She doesn’t have a name. It will be played in more than 100 cinemas in Shanghai for a week, starting June 14th, the day after the festival’s opening. National releases are also scheduled. There are no details yet for the title or release date of the second part.
The filming, produced by Chan’s own banner We Pictures, took place almost entirely in a Shanghai location.
In the video, Chang also paid tribute to his late father, writer-director Jang Tung-man. He passed away several months before filming began.
Along with Zhang, actors Wang Chuanjun, Lei Jiayin, Yang Mi, Da Peng, Li Xian and Ci Sha walked the red carpet at the Cannes premier in 2024.
At Sif, Hong Kong-born filmmaker Chang will also be recognized in the festival’s new filmmakers’ focus sidebar.
