Following a 2-7 start of the 2024 season, the Saints fired head coach Dennis Allen. New Orleans hired coveted offensive coordinator Kellen Moore from Philadelphia.
On May 10th, Saints QB Derekker announced his retirement from the NFL. He would have had shoulder surgery that he was on the sidelines in 2025. In the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Saint chose QB Tyler Schaff from Louisville. He competes against Spencer Lattler for the starting spot this offseason. Rattler was his fifth pick by the Saint in 2024.

Derek Kerr retired after the 2025 NFL Draft, and the saint took matters into his own hands. On the 40th pick, they chose QB Tyler Shaff from Louisville. He is an older 25 year old prospect. Shaff will turn 26 in September. His senior season was spent with the Louisville Cardinals. Shough threw for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions.
This offseason, Shough will compete against Saints 2024 Fifround Pick Spencer Rattler. Ironically, Ratler and Shaff share the same birthday. When Shough turned 26 this September, Rattler will be 25. Last season, Rutler played in seven games for the Saints and got six starts. He was 0-6 as a New Orleans starter.

First year head coach Kellen Moore said there is no timeline as to how long this QB fight will take. Spencer Lattler got most of his work with Starter on Wednesday. But Moore pointed out that Shaff will get most of the reps with him on Thursday. New Orleans will find the balance between the two until one person wins the job in the end.
Only two days of training camp, there are no QBs first in combat. If you’re waiting for the Saint to wait for the actual game-time action in the preseason, you can drag it out to August. Offensively, the saint has a talented skill position on the roster. However, QBs have obvious weaknesses. For at least the 2025 season, Spencer Latler or Tyler Shaff will begin their first week of Saint QB.
