Andrea Gibsonthe poet, activist and performance artist passed away on July 14, 2025. They were 49 years old. Andrea was known for her poems about LGBTQ+ identity and politics, using the pronoun of gender neutrality. Their inner circle, including Andrea’s wife; Megan FarleyAnnounced the news of their deaths in a Hartfeld Instagram message, which began with a quote from the late poet.
“Andrea Gibson passed away at his home (Boulder, Colorado), surrounded by his wife, Meg, four ex-girlfriends, mother and father, dozens of friends and three beloved dogs,” the statement read. “Andrea desperately wanted to live longer, but they probably couldn’t live more fulfilling.”
Another writer behind the Post, named Meg and Heather, added, “I don’t know at all how to encapsulate the size and grandeur of life like Andrea Gibson, so they write and continue to tell Andrea’s story, and Andrea will continue to live in every way.”
“Andrea would want you to know that they have their wishes,” the announcement concluded. “In the end, their hearts were covered in stretch marks.”

The cause of Andrea Gibson’s death
Based on a social media statement from her family, Andrea passed away after a four-year battle with ovarian cancer.
“Since learning that she had cancer in 2021, Andrea has been the champion of finding beauty in unlikely places in her most difficult time,” read an Instagram statement from Andrea’s family in July 2025. “For the past four years they danced with diagnosis, continually turning their internal compass towards joy. One of the last things Andrea said at this place was, “I loved my f**king life.” ”
Andrea Gibson’s Health: Lyme Disease and Ovarian Cancer
Before being diagnosed with ovarian cancer, Andrea also lived with chronic Lyme disease (CLD). Symptoms of Lyme disease generally include long-term pain, fatigue, neurocognitive and behavioral symptoms, according to the medical library.
“Some people may know that I have chronic Lyme disease, but I’ve only been in the past few years, but I’ve got the courage to write and speak publicly,” Andrea shared in March 2021 via Instagram. In their main post in their conversation, Andrea wrote in the caption, “Why Lyme is often not diagnosed, why people can have Lyme without recalling the biting of mites, why going to a doctor can be a particularly painful experience for marginalized people, and how trauma affects the immune system.”
Less than six months later, Andrea was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. They fought illness throughout the end of their lives.
