WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s recent threat to impose a 50% tariff on the European Union from July 9 has driven Brussels into action, with EU officials rushing to schedule a meeting with US counterparts ahead of the looming deadline.

While it remains uncertain whether the talks will narrow down the US trade deficit or bring about major advances in removing long-standing barriers to US exports, some observers believe the EU is negotiating from a weakness standpoint and this time they are willing to make concessions.
