The 21-year-old gunman, who attended a previous school in Glaz on Tuesday, killed 10 people and injured, carefully planned his rampage in advance.
That was according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office and police at a press conference Thursday.
During the search of his home, investigators discovered a pipe bomb, memo and plan that was not working. Police said the pipe bomb contained all the components.
His notes show that he regrets not having time to properly finalise his plans.
A farewell letter was also found among the items found, but according to investigators it reads as if an apology to his family without providing further information about the perpetrator’s motives.
Investigators also revealed that the young man who lived with his mother lived a secluded life.
He was reportedly introverted and retreated into a virtual world where his main social contacts came, and played the game of first-person shooters.
Three years ago, he dropped out of school without graduating. The 21-year-old had no criminal history.
Styrius State Police Chief Michael Lonegger explained that the assailant was enrolled in school at 9:43am Tuesday. He carried a backpack containing a Glock 19 pistol, a double-plated saw shotgun and ammunition.
He went to the school bathroom on the third floor, put on a gun belt, shot his glasses and shot his headset. At the time, there were 400 students in the school.
The heavily armed gunman then went upstairs and shot people there indiscriminately, then returned to the toilet on the third floor at 10:07am, where he shot himself.
The first police patrol arrived at school at 10:06am. By then the rampage was over and the gunman was already dead.
Investigators assume he didn’t know the young man the 21-year-old shot, but the teacher who was killed was teaching at school when the gunman was a student there.
Police investigations are still underway, with laptops and USB sticks still being analyzed.
So far, there are no specific clues as to the motivation for the shooting.
