If you’ve ever been worried about the price of signing up vpnthings can be much cheaper. Switzerland-based Proton AG (producing Proton VPN and Proton Mail) is falling firmly on the consumer side.
This follows a US court decision where Apple was ordered to suspend 30% fees on in-app purchases made beyond the App Store. In reality, it stops Apple from blocking access to external payment methods, such as publisher websites. Most VPN purchases are pretty big (especially if you go to one of the best VPNs), so it’s a fair amount of cash that Apple is shaking away on its own.
How does this affect Proton VPN?
The decision was made according to the ongoing Epic Games case, but Proton CEO Andy Yen quickly came down to the side of VPN users and said about X.
“In response to a recent court ruling in the US over Apple’s illegal in-app purchase monopoly, @ProtonPrivacy will ultimately allow iOS users to purchase subscriptions outside the App Store. AppleTax means lowering the price of users by up to 30%.”
The basic monthly price for Proton VPN is $9.99 when purchased online. So, when you sign up through the app and purchase a plan, you’ll get an additional 30% commission, and many companies will be handed over to users.
However, Apple and Epic Games are not the only decisions made by this court. Apple is making it increasingly difficult for vendors to offer the same price as Android devices on their iPhones and iPads. For example, Patreon’s creators have been hit by Apple’s App Store fees in recent years. (It is rumoured that Patreon plans to enable external payments after the verdict).
What does this decision affect?
Currently, court decisions only affect apps with in-app purchases available on the Apple App Store in the US. This recent development is actually a response to the 2021 ruling, with Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers awarding in the epic favor. This time, the judge ruled that Apple violated its 2021 injunction.
As a result, this is a US-based verdict that only affects the sales of App Stores in 50 states. However, the European Union has been struggling with Apple, and recently hit the tech giant with a fine of $562.7 million/€500 million as a result of a 30% committee.
So far, Proton is the most prominent organisation acting on an award. So, sign up for Proton VPN and Proton Mail on your Apple device and get 30% cheaper.
