Sony Pictures Classics has won all rights in Iraqi dramas in North America, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia and India President’s Cakewinner of Camera Door and Director’s Two-Week People’s Choice Awards at this month’s Cannes Festival.
As his feature debut written and directed by Hasan Hadi, the film is set in Iraq in the 1990s. There, the nine-year-old girl is required to use her wisdom and imagination to prepare every school to celebrate the country’s president’s birthday.
The film was produced by Leah Chen Baker and has executive producers such as US screenwriter Eric Roth and director Marielle Heller. The project was created in connection with Missing Peace Film, Working Burn Productions, Maiden’s Voyage Photographs and Sparks feature.
The acquisition was negotiated between UTA Independent Film Group, WME Independent and Sony Pictures Classics. Films Boutique represents international sales.
