For Microsoft, it’s bad news as a new set. Lenovo Legion Go s The benchmark between the Windows 11 and Steamos versions shows that Steamos is far better for gaming in the current handheld, highlighting the performance bay between the two platforms. With Steamos now officially available on third-party handhelds, this benchmark further proves that Windows is no longer necessarily the first option for PC gamers.

In the first Lenovo Legion Go S test at CES, I praised how natural Steamos felt in Lenovo Handheld. The company was not planning to compare performance with the Windows 11 model at the time, but the Microsoft platform appears to be a slower option for gamers looking for the best handhelds right now.

In a recent video titled “Windows Was Everything Issued”, YouTuber Dave2D was able to test Windows 11 and Steamos on a Lenovo Legion Go S on an AMD Ryzen Z2 Go APU. All games tested in all games had significantly lower performance on Windows, using the same low-medium settings presets on both devices.

Starting with the Cyberpunk 2077, the Steamos handheld managed to use an average of 59fps, while the Windows 11 model managed only 46fps. Similarly, in each of the other four games tested (Helldivers 2, Doom Eternal, Spiderman 2, and The Witcher 3), the Steamos model managed a frame rate on average between 9-11 fps higher than the Windows 11 model.

Dave2D makes a special mention of “reducing overhead” on Linux-based platforms compared to Windows 11 to help the platform run better on Ling 11. This also benefits greatly from the Valve improvements on its own Steam deck platform, the Proton compatibility layer used to play Windows games on Linux.

As I warned a few months ago, Linux Gaming is a serious and reliable threat to Windows. Gamers use Linux handheld gaming PCs such as steam decks, but Windows 11 continues to feel outdoors with handhelds such as Asus Rog Ally X. Steamos is now available on Rog Ally and other platforms.

It could come in the form of the rumored Xbox handheld, which is said to be an ASUS collaboration. However, Microsoft needs to work quickly to either lead to a wider range of Windows handhelds or completely replace the face.

Stock now appears to be limited across major retailers, but the Legion Go S using Stemos is now available for purchase. In the meantime, check out our Asus Rog Ally X reviews to see what you think about one of the best Windows 11 handhelds you can buy now.
