Totem teams with Studiocanal for Venice Critics’ Week title ‘Cotton Queen’

Exclusive: Totem Films, along with Studiocanal, handles international sales of Suzannah Mirghani Cotton Queen It’s ahead of next week’s world premiere in Venice Critics week.

Mirghani’s debut feature will be released on Lido on Wednesday, September 3rd. MadSolutionsand Film Clinic previously acquired MENA distribution rights under the title.

Set in a cotton farming village in Sudan, Cotton Queen Following her teenage Nafisa, she was raised by a heroic tale of her grandmother’s battle with the British colonies. When young businessmen arrive from overseas with new development plans, Nafisa becomes the centre of a power play to determine the future of the village.

The film is produced by Caroline Dove for the strange German bird with Didal Domery for the French Maneki film. Co-producers are Annemarie Jasil and Osama Bawardi from the Peliciten films, with Zippa Fight and Julia Peter from the Zippy films.

Sudanese actress Mihad Murtada leads the cast alongside Raba Mohamed Mahmoud and Tarat Fairad.

The film won the Maine Altequino Award at Cannes Cinephon in 2022, and won a prize at Cairo Film Connection that year, and was exhibited at Cinelink in Sarajevo and Kumura Lab at Doha Film Institute.

Totem previously represented Hindmedeb’s Sudanese documentary Sudan, remember usIt was released last year in the author’s sidebar in Venice.
