Trump Admin Can’t Detain Mahmoud Khalil on Foreign Policy Grounds, Judge Rules

A federal judge ruled on June 11 that President Donald Trump’s administration cannot justify Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student who played the leading role in the pro-Palestinian protests that rocked schools in 2024.

US District Judge Michael Fabiartz found that Halil granted an injunction against deportation or continued detention, and that he met the “irreparable harm” standard necessary to receive a federal court order in his favor. Farbiarz discovered that Halil has proven that his continued federal detention is causing such harm to his career, family and rights to free speech.
