US President Donald Trump said on Thursday it would be “very difficult” to reach a trade deal with Canada after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans to recognize the Palestinian state.

Trump’s remarks come one day before the August 1 deadline for new tariff contracts between the two countries. Canada is the second largest US trading partner, purchasing $349.4 billion in American products last year and exporting $412.7 billion to the US.
