Myanmar has formally expressed interest in participating in BRICS, confirmed Kang Zhou, Minister of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations. This comes after Laos announced they wanted to be part of the grouping and intend to join the alliance. Therefore, Myanmar and Laos are both countries that applied for membership this week.
“We’re interested in joining BRICS.” Kang Zhou said he has declared Myanmar’s interest in achieving membership. “Through working with BRICS, we intend to achieve new sources of funding for technology.” He said at a session at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF). Myanmar is demanding funds to strengthen the science and technology industry, and membership in the alliance is best.
Myanmar and Laos apply for BRICS membership
BRICS membership is the benefit of the caveat that it is now a privilege and not a right to win an entry. Developing countries feel that alliances are in favour of the majority of the global economy. A group of 10 orders a significant share, from petroleum to rare earth minerals and GDP in purchasing electricity parity (PPP).
Laos is currently the 46th country seeking BRICS membership. Of the 46, 23 countries have officially submitted applications and become members. The other 23 countries have informally expressed interest in joining the alliance. The group expanded in 2024 after sending invitations to six countries during the 2023 summit.
Of the six countries, only four agreed and won BRICS membership. Two other countries, Argentina and Saudi Arabia, have refused to join the bloc. Argentine President Javier Mailey publicly criticized Bullock and called it a group of dictators. He was attacked by Xi Jinping in China, Vladimir Putin in Russia, and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Iran. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia quietly resigned from the invitation as support from the US and West was needed to achieve its Vision 2030 plan.
