According to a survey by the European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO), US streamer spending on European original content rose 42% to 8.5 billion euros in 2024.
According to an EAO report, Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video spent more than 2 billion euros each on European original content last year, while Apple TV+ accounted for 600 million euros and HBO Max accounted for 500 million euros..
The report spans the wider European region, including the UK, but excludes Russia.
In total, global streamers accounted for 34% of all spending on original content in Europe except news, sports, acquired films and television shows.
However, streamer spending is highly concentrated in Europe. Together, the UK and Spain account for 58% of their spending on original European content.
The streamer spent 2 billion euros in Spain last year with original content of 2.9 billion euros in the UK.
Next up was France and Italy, each seeing 8 billion euros spending, followed by Germany (0.7 billion euros) and Sweden (0.3 billion euros).
Scripted programming accounts for the Lion’s share of global streamer spending, but scripted programming spending has also increased.
Among the scripted content, the series accounts for around 90% of global streamer spending compared to 10% of films. In the survey, total spending on European original works was 25.1 billion euros in 2024 by streamers, public and private broadcasters, excluding news, sports rights and acquisitions, reaching 25.1 billion euros from 22.6 billion euros in the previous year.
Traditional broadcasters’ spending still accounted for the majority of investments in the original content (16.7 billion euros), but are growing at a slower pace than streamers.
The private broadcaster was the largest investor in European original content in 2024, spending a total of 8.8 billion euros.
Public broadcasters invested 7.9 billion euros in original European content in 2024.
The UK recorded a large portion of its total spending, followed by Germany (4.5 billion euros) and France (3.3 billion euros).
