Sitting around the same table in the White House, five European leaders, the president of the European Commission and the NATO executive director gathered around the Ukrainian president and supported the demand for peace in front of US President Donald Trump.

According to the expert, the EU is back at the negotiation table for a possible peace deal between Ukraine and Russia.

“We say the EU is back, but now we have to stand firm and show determination. That also means we willing to embrace risk, especially by providing security assurances while placing our troops on the ground,” Sven Biscop, director of the Egmont Institute, a Brussels-based think tank, told Euronews.

The Europeans’ priorities were to promote Kiev’s security guarantees so that Ukraine will become an integral part of the future peace agreement, in order to protect Ukraine from another Russian attack in the future.

Security Guarantee

On the U-turn, the US President has for the first time suggested that the US could provide security assurances to Ukraine.

“Trump said this time Europeans should provide security assurances coordinated by the US,” Biscop explained.

“This is actually a change of perspective, as they said this is the job of Europeans and that the US or NATO wouldn’t be involved. So it’s a move in the right direction, but still, it’s not too detailed.”

There has yet to be an agreement on what security guarantees the US and EU are ready to offer to Ukraine.

Article 5

According to the director of the Egmont Institute, the best is the closest to Article 5 of the NATO Convention.

“Security assurance means committing to going to war if security is threatened. Nothing more is support, but not security assurance. The best way to make this reliable is to deploy troops to Ukraine after a ceasefire or peace agreement,” the researchers say.

Volodymyr Zelensky said the western allies will officially secure Ukraine security in the next 10 days.
