“Our hearts are deeply saddened by the news that Pete has passed away,” Cincinnati Reds owner Bob Castellini said in a statement. “He was one of the most intense competitors the game has ever seen, and every team he played was excellent for him. Rose got his start in Major League Baseball as a Cincinnati Reds player. He later played for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Montreal Expo, but Rose returned to the Reds in 1984 and played until 1986. He then became manager of the Reds and managed the team until 1989.
In his last year as the Reds manager, Rose got caught up in a controversy over allegations that he gambled in the game. He was accused of betting on his team.
