According to a large-scale survey by the relocation platform foreignerover 116,000 Americans seriously explored the idea of packing and moving overseas in 2024, Portugal tops the list as their favorite destination, followed by Spain and the UK! but why?
What drives the book of Exodus?
Let’s rewind for a moment. The trend for Americans to expand the stick is not brand new. However, many Americans have begun to wonder after the Covid-19 pandemic has become a mainstream option from home:If you can work from anywhere, why not try it from somewhere…Is it even better?

- Adventure and growth. It’s not just the beach or cheap wine (but Those help). Most respondents said they wanted more cultural richness, more self-development, and more.
- Political disillusionment. More than half (56%) of those surveyed said the US had become Too conservativeand 53% cited the country’s deep political division. It seems that many are looking for a quieter and more stable background for their lives.
- Flexibility in the workplace. The rise of remote work will not only make it possible to live abroad, but it is practical.
Portugal: Impossible frontline
So why Portugal? It’s not the first country that comes to mind for many Americans, but it should probably be.
With low cost of living, a stunning Atlantic coastline, welcoming locals and climate that feels like most years of Mediterranean spa days, Portugal quietly carves many boxes.
And it goes without saying that the country offers one of Europe’s most attractive digital nomads, not to mention a slightly more tolerant tax system than the IRS.
And food? let’s just Tell me there’s a reason Cream cake (A splendidly flake-like custard tart) is becoming a minor obsession among foreigners.
Who else made the top three?
Spain and the UK caught up with Portugal in the popularity contest. The Spanish location on the podium is not shocking. It shares Portugal weather, affordable prices and a well-known relaxed lifestyle.
What about the UK? Maybe it’s a shared language, Probably that’s true British Terry pull, or perhaps It is the romantic concept of having a pint in a pub from 300 years ago. Despite the weather, the UK is still a solid favourite for Americans who are looking for culture and history.
Final Thoughts: Are grass green?
Of course, moving abroad isn’t all wine and sunsets. Anyone considering the move should be aware of visa requirements, health care systems, cost of adjusting costs for living, and cultural differences.
But if Expatsi’s data is anything to use, the idea that a slower, sunny life, especially the solid Wi-Fi signal, is more than just a fantasy for thousands of Americans.
