Why did Eric Menendez deny parole?
Eric was denied parole. The Parole Board views him as a moderate risk to non-prison communities, and they cited his prison violation.
Eric Menendez’s prison violation: What were they?
According to parole committee member Robert Burton, Eric has multiple prison violations that contributed to the board’s decision to reject him.
“Contrary to the beliefs of your supporters, you weren’t a model prisoner, and frankly, we can tell that we’re a bit disturbing,” Burton told Eric during the 10-hour hearing where Eric appeared on a video call.

- At least three arguments while in prison
- His 2013 tax fraud
- Art supplies, wax candles, have spray paint in his cell
- He is said to have had “excessive physical contact” with his wife Tami.
- Smoking marijuana in his cells with another inmate
- Use supplies to make wine in prison
- Using a mobile phone
Burton noted at Eric’s hearing that he was involved in at least three fights and arguments behind the bar. One happened in November 1997 with someone identified as “Mr. Brown” after Eric was moved to an RDJ correctional facility.
“I was guilty of mutual combat. I fought back,” Eric admitted at the hearing, according to multiple outlets.
Burton later asked Eric about the tax fraud he committed in 2013. Eric defended that he was forced to plan due to an imminent threat from prison gangs.
“I was incredibly terrified,” Eric said, claiming that one of his friends in prison had been stabbed and raped by the gang in question. “This was a great opportunity to survive by combining them with themselves.”
In February 2018, Eric invited people into his cell to smoke marijuana, Burton said. It was also revealed that he has supplies in his cell to make wine.
Burton later pointed out the violation of Eric using his mobile phone, saying, “The phone, again, abstractly, people on the outside look at it and say, ‘What’s the big deal?’ (but that) the fact that you know what you’re doing doesn’t change.
Finally, Eric was also found along with his wife, Dammenendesher then nine-year-old daughter, while engaged in “excessive physical contact” within the prison chapel, Taliawas in the room. Eric said, “I was attracted to her so I sometimes pushed lines in the visit room with my wife. But Eric claimed that he and Tami were not engaged in sexual activities, and while Talia was reading the book in the room they just “cooked in.”
Burton concluded that Eric’s “institutional misconduct demonstrated a lack of self-awareness.”
