Civilization 7 still finds its feet, but it has never been an unprecedented era to play its predecessor. Civilization 6. Certainly, that’s a trend I’ve long believed in. Just as the fresh mechanics and changes in each sequel are exciting, every new entry in the iconic lineup of Sid Meier in 4x games requires time and expansion to truly reach the vertices that its precursors set. Civ 6 is now achieving its hibernator and making the most powerful fair case in the series. As this week’s Epic Games Store free game, you can do nothing.
This generous gift not only gives you the Civilization 6, but also continues to be the de facto champion on the list of the best 4x games, as well as includes the full platinum version. That is, you get both extensions along with six additional DLC packs. A platter of a strategic format spanning history, Robert won the original version on a strong 9/10 in our Civilization 6 review, despite noting that “some balance patches and extensions are needed before achieving absolute perfection.”
Of course, these balance patches and extensions are no longer here and are all included here. Rise and Fall embraces the natural decline and national flow of golden ages and dark ages, along with a loyalty system that monitors how valuable your leadership is by the cities and people you manage. Meanwhile, the storm gathering focuses on climate change and environmental hazards. Sometimes it throws an annoying spanner at your work, but it’s definitely a compelling strategic inclusion.
In addition to this, the Platinum version includes six additional civilizations and scenario packs covering the Vikings, Poland, Austria, Persia, Macedon, Nubia, Khmer and Indonesia. This covers most of the best Civ 6 DLCs and is enough to keep you busy for a long time. Going through the full list of Civilization 6 Civs, by the time you reach game number 8, you’ll probably still go.
